In January 1995, my senior year of high school, I got a pair of Technic 1200s while in Philadelphia looking at art colleges with my father. It was the best graduation present I could have received; before I ever had a cell phone, an email address, even a high school degree, etc. I had turntables. I practiced non-stop in my bedroom for months and eventually started getting gigs in the Pittsburgh area.
My first incarnation as a DJ was under the name d-cypol (disciple). The name seemed to fit since it had a robotic/ravey look and related to my personal beliefs. As dj d-cypol I toured much of the USA playing happy hardcore and drum&bass. Highlights from this time included working with a pirate radio station in Pittsburgh, throwing renegade dance parties with some of my best friends from high school, releasing my first mixtape “Pep Assembly 96”, playing awesome raves like Family Affair, Bass Rush, Weeble World, and Hullabaloo, and the new places I got to see and people I got to meet…the memories from this time in my dj life are fantastic!
After graduating university and starting to work as a high school art teacher, something (perhaps it was common sense) about playing underage events just didn’t appeal to me anymore. I began focusing on club nights and eventually left my dj alias for my real name. I had also changed stylistically as a dj at this point, and d-cypol didn’t have the same fit for someone spinning hip hop, house, and funk. I held various residencies in clubs in the Seattle area and would play lots of special events with friends.
Currently I’m living in Mexico City and play once or twice a month (usually in the Black Horse in La Condesa). Right now my style is an upbeat mix of hip hop, funk, house, and new wave with lots of tricks and scratches…although sometimes I really enjoy playing a banging set of straight house music when given then chance. Below is a laundry list of cities I’ve played in…I probably have forgotten a few.
